The movie about Sister Helen was truly amazing; I really did enjoy watching it. It’s very rare to hear about an old lady opening a house and proving and caring for addicts and men too. Addicts are very hard to control, and in a way I find it funny how an old lady controlled all of these men, and how they feared her so much. Sister Helen is a very interesting character; she is not the typical sister; she curse, yells, and say whatever on her mind. Sister Helen is real and had good attentions, after what had happened to her kids and husband she wanted to make a change, she felt like she owned someone to make a change or maybe she wanted to feel a little better about herself by helping others. The ghetto where she was living is a horrible place to live at, and no one really chose to live there, but she made a choice to help out the people who are in need. Even though Sister Helen was trying to have that taught love, but we see how soft hearted she could be also, when she got attached to some of those men. She felt like they were her kids, especially one of them who told her he looked at her as a mother, you could tell that really did mean a lot to her, because she loved him too. Personally I did not like Sister Helen’s method of “helping”, I felt like she took everything to the extreme and she treated people like they were under her and didn’t care about their feelings. Yelling, screaming, and insulting others never helps it may scare them but it never helps them to get better, or stay good, it’s just a fear and people always over come they’re fear. We have seen how as soon as Sister Helen passed away most of them went back to their old habits, and didn’t care because there was no one there to yell at them. Even though, I did not like Sister Helen’s method but I had to say by the end of the movie I couldn’t help but tear up when she passed away, because she passed away trying to help out the needy, she fought and fought for the last moment in her. What I really liked about this interview it was real, Sister Helen choose to talk about what she wanted and what she didn’t, and it was strange how she even passed away making this interview.

I really did enjoy reading chapter 2 because I counted with a lot of points in it, and I think everyone did. A lot of things in chapter 2 many students went through, and I personally went through. The most important thing that stood out to me is writing outing your comfort zone, I always had a problem with that so a lot of times I feel as my papers are very boring the “usual” nothing new and nothing interesting. I always have that fear what if the reader would not like it, or what if it was too much and so on… From experience I’ve learned writing about your own experience is one of the best tricks on writing a good paper. Also I’ve always have the problem of not raising my hand or not speaking out in public unless I am a 100% about what I am going to say, and most of the times in class even if I have certain about my information most likely I won’t raise my hand, because I don’t want to risk it. The K-12 part was kind of funny to me; however, very true I think all of us went through this, and like I said before many of us went through a lot of things in this chapter, this chapter should’ve concocted with almost everyone if you went to school. As a child I always hated memorizing because I am the type of person who is not good at that I have to understand something in order to memorize, and in school before that’s what a lot of teacher wanted us to do just keep memorizing and keep on memorizing and the teachers especially at younger grade never wanted the student to think outside of the box so I find it a little funny how now college teachers want us to think outside of the box and be different.

For my research journal I’ve choose to talk about the closing down of the mental institutions. It’s such an important subject to me because not a lot of people care to talk about it, or even think about it. A lot of people may argue and say its better it’s a great idea to close down all of the mental institutions, in some cases yes it is; however, not for everyone. A lot of people have no family or friend who would want to take care of them, some people even do have family but that family does not want to help or does not care to help… so where is the person left? In the street. Yes, according to Mike Nichols 45-50% of homeless people are mentally ill. That sentence right there just shocked me! So while the government is cutting down and “saving money” a lot of people who need help are just left on the street no homes, and nowhere and no one to help them. no one cares about a mentally ill homeless person, we all think if we give a homeless person dollar we did him/her a huge favor. We tend to forget those homeless people are sick and they need some place where they are helped. Also, another important aspect we tend to forget is some people who are mentally ill can not live a “normal life”, they need to be put away in a place where they are getting the proper treatment. Some people are just danger to themselves or society, and what happens to those people? prison or death. This subject is very important I hope the government start realizing what’s going on before its too late.

Receiving feedback was and is never a problem for me, I handle criticism very well. I actually love when someone is being “mean” as some people would say because I know that person is just honest and saying whats on his/her mind. With some of the feed back i received I could tell some people are holding back a lot. I think its better for everyone just to be honest because everyone is just trying to help everyone else to do better. Sadly for me its harder to give any criticism for someone to improve his/her paper because I always tend to only see the positive things, but I promise I’ll work on that!

Chapter 7 is the most useful I’ve read so far from Why White Rice? I always had a problem with understanding the citation in any paper, because technically nothing is new, we learn everything we know. Even me saying this I feel like I am plagiarizing because Swanson said something similar to that in chapter seven so that means I still have to give him credit for that? This chapter did clear a lot of things for me about the whole citation and stealing people’s ideas. It makes perfect sense you have to give credit for the person who came up with that idea and so on. However, I still find it a little confusing understanding the section about “Give credit but take ownership”. Does anyone ever come up with a new idea? Because it even states in the chapter “What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again: there is nothing new under the sun.”(Essl 1:9-11, New International Version). Therefore, nothing is new someone probably came up with your idea before so it’s not original. Than chapter seven talks about how something can be new, if you hear for example something and later on makes your light bull goes on, it gave you a new idea finally that’s new! Right? I think so, but do you still have to give credit for that person who helped you come up with that idea…. The part about the reasons for citing sources helped a lot with the understanding why we must always cite, it’s true it just makes your paper sound better, trusty, and more understandable. You’re not just putting your ideas or what YOU think about something but your backing it up with better sources and information.

Chapter three of Why White Rice talks about what I personally went through. I had always wanted to get into psychology, and when I started in Moraine Valley that’s what I did, Psychology was my choice. After two semesters everyone was telling that it was a horrible choice and I should choose something else, that I will never find a job with my Psychology degree. Therefore, I listed to everyone and changed my major and a year before graduating I decided I wanted to go back to the Psychology major. That’s how much I hated the other major I choose, I hated all of my classes and couldn’t wait until I was done. However, at the end I couldn’t take it I went back to Psychology, even though I wasted money and time but it’s better than being unhappy with my career. Career a lot of us have to remember as the author talks about in the chapter is something you are going to be doing for the rest of your life, everyday so it better be something you enjoy very much! Also another important subject I want to discuss is the video by Daniel Pink, if you did not want that video I highly recommend it, it’s an excellent video, it’s interesting how Daniel pink view some aspects. Most of the points he made in the video I totally agree with and a lot of the information given in that video are new to me. His outlook on life a lot of people might say “positive” but I think it’s true, if you really think about it. or perhaps it just depends on what type of person you are, if you look at the glass have empty or half full.

What am I missing?

Prof McGuire
You are citing chapter 3 specifically, so you are missing the name of the chapter and the page range. You are also missing the city of publication. And for this citation, you have one too many authors listed. Use your Fister trifold to help or the MLA handbook. Give it a shot.

I’m sure there are plenty of things you can do with psychology- I think the demand is actually increasing since a lot of children are now being diagnosed with “ADD” and since the divorce rates are so high, the kids and the divorced parents usually need to see someone after they go through the process. Also, a lot of children are being born autistic for some odd reason, and there are a lot of people coming back from IA with PTSD. Meanwhile many kids in urban areas around have have terrible parents and grow up using drugs and alcohol and getting into bad relationships, and will probably need to see someone too.

Yes, you are right about everything, thank god its increasing because i truly love psychology. With autism a lot of people think it increased the past couple of years but actually autism is been around forever, the only different people used to diagnose it with mental retardation and so on.
That’s why a lot studies are about autism, because a lot people don’t even know about it, and until now no one really knows what’s the cause. I know this because my little brother is autistic so I am always researching about it.

When I first started reading chapter 5 I thought it was going to be an interesting piece, but sadly it was kind of boring. It started off good, perhaps because the author started out with personal story and I think we all love to hear people’s personal stories. Even though it was really boring to read, it was very important! A lot of the topics the author discussed are very helpful information we all need, not just for this class, but for any class in the future. I must admit I am guilty of using Wikipedia or Google as my primary source, when I want to find out any information about a county, history, ect. My reason is why I use Wikipedia so much is because I have read somewhere Wikipedia is information put together from student in Harvard, I really don’t remember where I read that, come to think about it I probably read it on Wikipedia itself. However, after reading this I discovered that in quote “ Anyone can contribute to wikipedia.ANYONE.”-Swanson(121) That part scared me because now I know for sure a lot of information I took from there is not precise as I thought it was. Another important aspect disgusted when anyone is asked where do you get your information from? Most people would probably say the media, the newspapers, and so on….. But when you think about it as discussed in WWR most of the information we get is from people around as, such as friends family and coworkers. I really think interviewing people is a great way to collect information or helps you make a better understanding about what you are looking for.

That citation is missing a lot. Remember, Why White Rice?< .em> is an anthology of essays by multiple authors. Use your Fister trifold to help or the MLA handbook. Ask if you have specific questions.

Sujoud,
It is admirable that you feel so strongly for the care of those people with mental illness, often they have physical limitations as well that demand more intermediate care. I believe the government is praying that the private sector will absorb this newest budget cut by opening up not-for profit organizations. This is a huge endevor which depends on private sector and business support both manatarily and with supplies and a tremendous amount of trained volunteers. It will remain to be seen what will happen to the individuals no longer being supported by the state.
