Welcome

Welcome to Composition II (COM102) at Moraine Valley Community College. This is Prof Mike McGuire's course. Come on in. Look around. Write. Think. Join a conversation.

Standing To Do

There are a few basic activities that you should be doing on an ongoing basis as part of this course. They are repeated activities and critical for your success here.

1

Post under “Research Journal” in the Conversation Center at least once a week, focusing on what you're reading, researching, hearing, and thinking regarding your area of focus in the course. Each post should center on your response to one cited information source and be at least 250 words long.

2

Publish a 1250 to 1500 word draft (or a revision) to your blog as assigned—in response to the given prompt. All major writing prompts will be posted here to the professor's blog as they are assigned.

3

During the week immediately following a major draft due date, read and comment on the posts that are categorized as “Ready for Review” published by the members of your review group. Respond to at least three peers.

4

As assigned throughout the course, complete a “Personal Action Report and Self-Assessment.” The report assignment will be made available to you here when assigned through the professor's blog and submitted privately to the instructor. It is an essential part of the course and should be done thoroughly and thoughtfully.

These are some of the key (and repeated) activities of our course. You'll get the feel for it. Consult the official course schedule for specifics.

Self-Assessment 1

Ok, here’s the first of several self-assessments you will be asked to complete in the course. Do an excellent job here. Be honest and thorough. Provide necessary evidence for your claims as you see fit. This self-assessment is a contract item. So to stay on a track for at least a B in this course, you need to complete this assessment to the best of your ability. This is due by 8am on Monday 2/6.

Note that you should take your time with this. It might, therefore, be a good idea to type this is a text editor (like Notepad) off-line and then paste the sections into the form below when you are ready. Otherwise, you will have to complete it in a single sitting. Just a thought.

Looking Close and Being Honest

It's time for you to complete one of several "self-assessments" or "personal action reports" in this course. Remember that these self-assessments are a big deal in this course. They are a contract item. If you do not complete this self-assessment by the due date, you will have broken one of the terms of our grading contract and may very likely lose your chance of earning at least a B in the course. So, it is essential that you complete this thoughtfully and on time.

Please complete all the fields below as thoroughly and as thoughtfully as you can. All fields are required.

Your Name

Your Email

Draft Work

Describe to what degree you have been completing your draft work thus far for this course in a thorough and timely fashion. Have your drafts been complete? Long enough? Completed thoughtfully in a good faith effort to do your best work? Be as specific as you can in your answer.

Plans for Revision

Be specific in your current plans to revise some of your draft work so far in the course. In light of feedback you have received and your own thinking, what and how specifically do you plan to revise your work? Be as specific as you can in your answer. I'm looking for details.

Peer Review

Offer an assessment of the peer review work you have recently completed. Have you been writing in response to at least three of your peers during the peer review weeks? Did you write a complete multi-paragraph descriptive essay on each of your peers' drafts? Did you focus on describing the essay and how it affected you as a reader rather than giving advice or criticism? Be as specific as you can in your answer.

Conversation and Community Contribution

Evaluate your contribution to the Conversation Center. Have you been posting regularly, contributing to the conversation. Have you been contributing to the conversation, say, three times per week? What about the quality and quantity of each post? Are they substantial? Have you offered specific insight on the reading of the course? Have you replied to what other people are saying in the Conversation Center? Have you assisted others? Have you demonstrated leadership? Be as specific as you can in your discussion here.

Research Journal Assignments

Have you completed your weekly "research journal" assignments to date? How would you rate the quality of the sources you are sharing in your research journal posts? Have you written at least 250 words for each post? Does this post include well-integrated connections to the source itself--whether this connection is a quote, paraphrase, or summary? Have you included an accurate MLA citation for each post? Explain in detail the quality of your work for these assignments.

The Course Reading

How have you been doing with the reading assignments of the course? Are you keeping up? Have you been connecting your conversation, peer review comments, and other writing of the course to the major readings? Are you posting thoughtful questions when you don't understand a concept? Be honest and specific in your response.

Three Lessons Learned

Tell me three things you've learned so far in the course.

Next Steps

What specific steps will you take from this point to ensure your success in the course? Any adjustments?

A Grade?

In terms of overall participation, expectations as outlined in the course, on the syllabus, and on the grading contract what grade do you believe you are earning currently? Be honest.
